    April Wang, LMFT

    Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist

During my interview for the Graduate Program at Northwestern University, I was asked the question what my growing edges were. This phrase, "growing edge" has since moved me from a mindset of strengths/weaknesses to opportunities/growth. We are all too familiar with thoughts like "I'm not cut out for this", "Am I being a good parent/partner/friend", or "I will never be able to (fill in the blank)". As a strength based and solution focused therapist, I see these thoughts as our brains' way of communicating that we have reached a growing edge and it's time to expand. These temporary pain-points do not define us as individuals but rather opportunities for growth and healing.

As someone who came to the United States at the age of 15, I have experienced first-hand the challenge of finding balance as an Asian American. I continue to help others navigate this challenge, as strengths in one culture may unintentionally become a struggle in another culture. Additionally, I help people integrate their cultural identity, which may include faith, personal beliefs, cultural values, and more, to find inner acceptance and empowerment. I have extensive experiences working with high conflict couples and complicated family systems after working in a higher level of care program. I am particularly passionate about working with new parents.

My approach to therapy is collaborative using an integrative systemic model. We will work together to find the balance between behavior approach (learning and applying concrete coping strategies) and psychodynamic approach (increasing self-reflection and addressing underlying causes). Whether you are seeking short term therapy or are ready to do long term work, we will work together to create a treatment plan that best suits your needs.
